When Motherhood Doesn't Come Naturally

The wish to have a child is a deep instinctual urge; the ability to care for the child is not innate and must be nurtured. In fact, many new mothers feel torn between their desire for a child and their wish to be free of long involvements and responsibilities. Becoming a mother is a testing time for a woman. Then she takes on the truly feminine role as opposed to just being a sex partner in a relationship of comradeship with a man. In the new situation, she is dependent on her husband and has to accept his care and protection for herself and the baby. For the first time the new mother is faced with steadfast and constant caring for another being, totally dependent on her. She feels intensely vulnerable. All her insecurities and doubts about her capacities as wife and mother come to the fore. The role of mother is new to her, she is unaccustomed to it, but the baby takes her for granted, twenty-four hours a day. The cries and constant demands of the baby may stir up feelings of hostility in the mother and a longing to escape. She may feel inadequate, persecuted by everything, unable to cope and weighed down by guilt.
